Who is Rayne Dowell ?

A writer who believes a book should be built in front of people, the way cathedrals were.

Rayne Dowell was born in a harbor town much like Voisery, which is either an influence or an escape, depending on the chapter. Seventeen years of notebooks, nine cities, one master’s degree in pretending to be a sensible employee, and two finished novels that live in a drawer and are, in Rayne’s words, “happily retired.”

The third one refused the drawer. The Quiet Part — a story about a missing lighthouse keeper and the letters a town never sent — is being written in public on this website: one chapter a month, posted as it’s written, with the bad days left visible on purpose.

When the last chapter posts, the serial gets revised into a book. Possibly two. The members of the reading room will have read every word first, and their names will be in the acknowledgements, where the architecture of a book really lives.

Unsent Letters (in the book)

"I write the way winter arrives — slowly, and then all at once, over everything I meant to protect."

— Rayne Dowell, from the notebook

The best place to watch the book being born is the members' reading room.
